Wisconsin Cares, Aurora, Colorado Memorial

On July 20, 2012, a mass shooting occurred at a Century movie theater in Aurora, Colorado, during a midnight screening of the film The Dark Knight Rises. A gunman, dressed in tactical clothing, set off tear gas grenades and shot into the audience with multiple firearms, killing 12 people and injuring 58 others.  Along with the rest of the nation, Summerana was devastated to hear this news and wanted to send them a Wisconsin Cares card to the memorial.  Here is a response I got shortly after, it seriously made me tear up!

In case you can’t read it, here is what it says:

Dear Grace: I still get choked up when I talk about my visit to the memorial in Aurora, CO, but I really want to share with you what happened when I delivered your messages. Shortly after I added the Wisconsin Cares card to the memorial, two women walked past it. One of them pointed to it and said very softly, “Oh, my goodness. Look at that. It’s from Wisconsin.” The other nodded, bent down and touched it, and wiping away tears, said, “That’s so nice.”All of us had gone there to pay tribute to the victims, but, in being surrounded by hundreds of other caring people and symbols of heartfelt support, we left with inklings of reassurance. Our humanity and civility may have suffered a terrible gash, but, together, we can heal even the deepest of wounds. And you were a big part of that.

I was surrounded by people praying, people weeping, parents griping the hands of their children, a women adding a dried flower bouquet to each of the markers, a man chanting softly. It’s heartbreaking to watch a community of people stricken with such intense grief. But, I just wanted you to know, you have helped the healing begin. Thank you so much for being part of sending a message of support to the people of Aurora. In Peace,
Jeri Bonavia
